Calling All 5th Grade Writers!

September 5, 2017

Enlighten SC has issued a Children’s Book Challenge for all fifth-grade students from South Carolina. Students are invited to write and illustrate a children’s book about the history of electricity in the state and how it has impacted the lives of residents.

Students can work in groups of 2-4 for each entry under the supervision of an adult (a parent or teacher). A book set is provided for the project upon registration.

Each book needs to include:

  • What is an electric cooperative?

  • Why were electric cooperatives formed?

  • Any topic about energy, as one of the characters or elements of the story. Some ideas are renewable energy, energy efficiency, an environmental issue, energy usage, an energy source, energy distribution, forms of energy, and rural electrification.

  • Include an “Author’s Summary” or small introduction and a photograph of the author(s) on the inside back cover of the book. Do the same for the illustrator.

Deadline for registration is December 31.

Books must be submitted by February 2.

Local co-op winners will be announced on February 26.

Each participant in the group (including the teacher) will receive a check for $50. All local winners will be sent to the state office for a state winner. The state winner will be decided by April 6 and will receive $500. All winners will have their book published!
